That 70s Kitchen – The Living Room, Network Ten

Network 10’s hit tv show The Living Room teamed up with Apollo Kitchens to deliver an exceptional 70s themed kitchen for a mother and son in Sydney’s South West.

After moving four times in five years, mother and son, Michelle and Liam settled down in a time warp townhouse that’s one big nod to the decade of fondue and Roasted Cauliflower With Tuna Mornay Sauce (thanks Miguel Maestre).

Having finally found her forever home, Michelle was after a forever kitchen designed to fit her retro 70s taste and modern lifestyle. The existing kitchen was small in size, with a wall that blocked it off from the laundry and dining area. Her dream was to knock a wall down and have more open space.

At Apollo Kitchens we are always taking care of business and to kick start the project, we organised a design consultation in our Alexandria showroom. Within a short time frame, we had selected materials, finalised the layout and checked the kitchen dimensions during an onsite visit.

From there, we said “catch you on the flip side” to Michelle and began manufacturing her dream kitchen. Here is the result:

This cool beans kitchen utilised Laminex Natural Teak Nuance for that the real thing timber feel on the doors and external panels. The benchtop is a timeless Caesarstone Blanco Drift with Arris Edge.

As an Apollo Kitchens standard inclusion, the doors were fitted with Hettich’s Sensys Soft Close Hinges and the drawers were lined with Hettich’s Arci Tech soft-close premium runners. Handles were selected from the Kethy collection.

The “avocado green” splashback helped bring a little bit of colour and pop into the kitchen’s 70s design. And to include life into the kitchen, we included planter shelves for fresh herbs. Apollo Kitchens also allowed space for additional storage hidden next to the pantry for toasters and small appliances.

Apollo Kitchens partnered with Smeg appliances to deliver the final touches and complete the 70s look. Working together, we produced a number of custom features including a concealed rangehood, integrated dishwasher and oven.

You ain’t seen nothing yet. To maximise the kitchen space, a wall was knocked down and the laundry was relocated into the closet.

“When I first saw the kitchen, I couldn’t believe it was the same… It’s exactly what I wanted” said Michelle as she walked into her new abode. “The kitchen flows nicely with the rest of the house”

“I was gobsmacked. It’s so sick,” said her son Liam.

Michelle, we hope you are enjoying the kitchen and cooking up a disco inferno. If you have any issues, just blame it on the boogie or give us a call on 1300 90 80 90.

It was a pleasure working with Barry DuBois and The Living Room team. Barry’s energy and passion for this project really shone through. If you would like to watch this episode visit TenPlay now.
